Formerly
a low-level field agent working in Mardipoor, Maria Hill had been courted
almost a year in advance before finally being pushed ahead more then
a few pay grades to be made director of S.H.I.E.L.D. In the wake of Nick
Fury's 'secret war', Hill faced a tough trial by fire as she confronted
right away the fallout of those events in NYC, including the discovery
of a level-10 agent, Daisy Johnson, with a security clearance higher
then her own. Hill's appointment to stewardship of S.H.I.E.L.D. was
a secret from the general public for a time; an LMD of Nick
Fury still acting as public director. Hill eventually cemented her
command, transferring the Contessa out to the United Kingdom and sidelining
the likes of Daisy Johnson, Jessica Drew, and Sharon Carter.
Soon thereafter Hill uncovered an illegal covert faction of S.H.I.E.L.D. mining
vibranium in the Savage Land. Her attack on the mining camp nearly wiped
out the nascent 'new' Avengers, who were investigating the escape of
super-villains from the Raft. Later Hill's distrust of the new Avengers
grew following the House of M affair that depowered mutants around the
world.
The rollout of the controversial Superhuman Registration Act positioned
Hill against the likes of Captain America and others resisting government
registration. Ironically she has found favor from one of the architects
of S.H.I.E.L.D., Tony Stark. She earned Iron Man's respect when she ignored
the president's orders to nuke an island the Avengers were on. On the
other side of the law, Hill has not been shy to employ hard tactics to
reign in those against registration. Hill ordered Captain America's arrest
by a squad of S.H.I.E.L.D. 'cape-killers' led by Dum Dum Dugan and later unsuccessfully
tried to use Sharon Carter to trap Rogers. Hill used an LMD of Nick Fury
to arrest Spider-Woman and sent the Thunderbolts to capture Spider-Man
following his change of heart on registration.
Following a single-handed rescue of Iron Man and prevention of the destruction
of Avengers Tower, Hill confessed to Stark that she regrets her job as
director and believes he should take her place. In the aftermath of the
superhuman 'civil war', Tony Stark took command of S.H.I.E.L.D. and serves
as director of S.H.I.E.L.D., replacing Hill and leaving her as a deputy director
along with Dum Dum Dugan.
In the wake of her
demotion, an invasion by the Skrulls strikes Earth and Hill finds her
world turned upside down. Dugan is revealed to have been replaced with
a Skrull and takes out SWORD in order to make way for the invasion
fleet. S.H.I.E.L.D. is disbanded after the defeat of the Skrulls and HAMMER
is created in its place, leaving Hill no where to go. Tony Stark, now
a wanted man goes on the run but gives Hill a special mission that
brings her to the Futurepharm where she tangles with the Controller.
The encounter leaves her unstable, but nonetheless she teams up with
Black Widow and arrange to meet with Captain America to hand over the
Stark hardware.
